Okra

Between the rainy days and the dry days it has been hard to think about putting anything in the ground because it has still been so wet.  So, yesterday and today we bit the bullet and planted.  Tomatoes, peppers, squash, and okra were on the top of the list to get planted and they did.   One unique method that we use when planting okra is the night before we plan on planting we soak the seeds in a paper towel and place them in a plastic freezer bag. This allows a few if not most of the seeds to sprout overnight and decreases germination time spent in the soil.  We then plant 1/2 inch deep with 1 foot between each plant and watch for them to poke through the earth.   Also, as strange as it may sound if you are longing for that smell of fresh okra open the bag of okra seeds that has been soaking overnight and before you plant smell.  Its like fresh picked okra from the garden.

It's going to be a beautiful weekend to set a garden out!

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

My Day:

 This was today:
Woke up at 7:30 am and made coffee and turned on the lights for the plants. Breakfast was peanut butter toast followed by morning plant check up around the greenhouse.  Finally the glorious part of breakfast coffee.  This led to returning outside to set most of the plants outside of the greenhouse for some real vitamin D. Potting soil was low so I had to Run to town.  Getting back planting Parsley, Dill, Sage, and Cilantro was the next order of business totaling 120 all together. After shuffling some plants around for this weekends market everything went back into the greenhouse for the night and the hatches were battened down for the stormy weather. ( Also, watering and lunch was somewhere in there). Now tired and hungry again, I can still think of nothing more enjoyable and fulfilling that I'd rather be doing.

It may be Thursday night but I am not the only one waiting for Hillcrest Farmers Market this Saturday!  Six varieties of tomatoes and four varieties of peppers have been hardened off as well as some oregano and (hopefully) some thyme.  All are waiting to make their debut into someone's garden.

Success as the Farmers Market !

Even with down pours of rain this morning today was epic!  Cherokee Purple tomatoes were a hit ( among other tomatoes and peppers) and my debut at Hillcrest farmers market was memorable  and great.  The vendors were nice, helpful, and courteous.  And, to all who showed up and purchased plants and seeds on such a soggy cold day thank you.  I wish bountiful success to you all.  And a big thanks to Pulaski Heights Baptist Church for this wonderful community outreach.  also, be sure to check back next week for updates on tips for growing, plant health, and harvesting.  Happy Easter!

Farmers Market

This Saturday I will be at Hill Crest Farmers Market located at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd in Hillcrest from 8 am until noon.

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Potatoes !

The first spuds of the season have been planted !  This is a new crop for me to add to the seasonal line up because I used to always think potatoes did not have a good space/ yield output.  However, digging a little deeper I found out that one potato plat could yield up to one pound of potatoes or more!  So, I got busy doing a little research of different varieties I was interested in and chose Red Pontiac and Yukon Gold.  I can't wait to taste my first homegrown spuds and offer them at local Farmers Markets !

What to Plant in March

It still maybe to cold outside to put the tomato plants in the ground, but here in zone 7 we can still sow something out or in !

Sow Outdoors: Leafy crops like Arugula, Endive, Lettuce, Mache, Pac Choi, Radicchio,Sorrel, and Spinach.  Legumes such as Peas (snow, shell, and snap) and root crops like Beets, Kohlrabi, Potatoes, Radishes, and turnips.

Sow Indoors:  Summer annuals that need a head start indoors like Eggplants, Tomatoes, and Peppers.

A garden is an amazing thrill to watch grow.  Whether spring, summer, fall, or winter knowing what to plant when gives us a possibility (sometimes with a little protection like row covers) to garden all year long.
